Frequently Asked Questions

The doctor’s office said I needed to be fasting for my blood test. What does fasting mean?

Fasting means to go without any food or drink for a designated period of time, typically 8-12 hours, prior to your blood test.

Do I need to fast before all blood tests or just certain ones?

Generally, it’s best to fast even though it is not a requirement for most blood tests. There are a few tests, however, that require a fasting sample. The most commonly ordered tests that are usually performed on a fasting sample include:

  • Glucose
  • Triglyceride
  • Lipid profile
  • Basic or Complete Metabolic Panel

Call your physician if you have any questions.

Will my insurance pay for my blood test?

Monroe Surgical Hospital accepts most insurance but you may want to check with your insurance carrier for specific details.

Do I need an appointment for my blood test?

Routine outpatient tests do not need to be scheduled. However, bone marrow exams and glucose tolerance tests must be scheduled in advance. Monroe Surgical Hospital Laboratory requires written physician orders, which may be faxed. Orders may be faxed to (318) 812-9586.

There are a few reference tests that can only be collected Monday through Thursday because of special shipping and handling requirements. It is always best to check with the Laboratory at (318) 812-9523 if you have any questions.

What is the earliest time or the latest time I can get blood tests done?

Plan to arrive 30 minutes ahead of time in order to be registered before having your tests done. Routine outpatient hours are 6:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday and 6:30 am to 4:00 pm on Friday. The laboratory is closed on Saturday and Sunday for outpatients.

What information do I need to bring with me to Monroe Surgical Hospital when I have blood tests ordered?

You will need the signed physician’s order containing your name and date of birth, your diagnosis and the tests that need to be done. Adults will also need photo identification and insurance information.
